You’re Not Behind. You're Just Earlier In The Process.

early in the process

One of the most common messages I receive starts the same way. “I feel behind.” Behind in school. Behind in applications. Behind compared to classmates who seem to be winning at everything. Behind the timeline you created for yourself when you were younger and more naive about how nonlinear life actually is.

Let me be honest with you. Feeling behind usually means you are in the middle of growth. It means you are stretching into something unfamiliar. It means you are doing something hard enough to challenge your comfort zone.

We live in a culture that celebrates outcomes but hides effort. You see the match announcement, not the rejection emails. You see the confident resident, not the anxious student they used to be. You see highlight reels, not the quiet nights spent doubting yourself. When you compare your reality to curated success stories, you will always feel like you are losing.

Progress is not a straight line. Some seasons are about building skills. Some are about surviving. Some are about learning from mistakes that feel painful in the moment but powerful in hindsight. All of them matter.

When I was studying for Step 1, I constantly felt behind. Behind my study schedule. Behind my peers. Behind the imaginary version of myself who was supposed to be calm and disciplined and unbothered. What carried me through was not motivation. It was consistency. Showing up on the days I wanted to quit. Doing the work even when it felt slow and boring. Trusting that small daily effort compounds.

If you feel behind right now, zoom in instead of panicking about your entire future. Ask yourself what you can control today. One focused study session. One honest conversation with a mentor. One application submitted. One habit that moves you forward even by one percent.

You do not need to be perfect this year. You need to be persistent. You do not need to have every answer. You need to keep learning. You do not need to match someone else’s timeline. You need to stay aligned with your own values.

Your life is not a race. It is a process of becoming. The uncomfortable part you are in right now is not a punishment. It is preparation.

You are not late. You are not broken. You are not failing.

You are building something real, and real growth is never rushed.
