I know I am biased, but dermatology truly is the best residency. Not just because it is competitive. Not just because of lifestyle. But because of the people and the impact.
Dermatology sits at this beautiful intersection of medicine, surgery, pathology, and artistry. One minute you are diagnosing a complex autoimmune blistering disease. The next: you are performing a procedure that changes someone’s life. It keeps you intellectually engaged while also letting you work with your hands.
The skin is visible. That means the emotional weight of disease is visible too. Acne is not just acne. Psoriasis is not just plaques. Skin conditions affect confidence, identity, and mental health. As dermatologists, we get to restore more than just physical health. We restore self esteem.
I love that dermatology requires pattern recognition and precision. You have to slow down and really look. The details matter. It feels like detective work every single day.
The culture also matters. The mentors I have met in dermatology are thoughtful, collaborative, and genuinely invested in teaching. There is an emphasis on balance without sacrificing excellence. You can be ambitious and still have a life.
Procedural days feel empowering. Clinic days feel relational. Academic days feel stimulating. It is variety without chaos.
People often reduce dermatology to lifestyle. Yes, the lifestyle is good. But what makes it the best residency for me is alignment. It aligns with how I think, how I connect with patients, and how I want to practice medicine long term.
Dermatology lets you follow patients over time. You build real relationships. You watch someone’s confidence grow as their skin clears. That never gets old.
If you are drawn to derm, do not let anyone minimize your interest. It is not superficial. It is comprehensive. It is impactful. And for me, it is home.
